33rd Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday

In the tears Our Lord sheds in today’s Gospels we can find two regrets: that despite his perfect fidelity to the plan of his Heavenly Father not as many would benefit from his redemption as could have, and over how much more he expected from his beloved Jerusalem, also known as the city of David with all the Messianic importance that implied. The end of his earthly mission was coming soon, and when the end is in sight, regrets often bring tears to our eyes.

We can only imagine how Jerusalem and Israel would have been if they’d welcomed him in faith to be their Messiah and eternal king, but to do so they had to believe in a reign and a Kingdom that was far greater than the territory of Palestine and the earthly Jerusalem. Jesus was to usher in a new earth, a justice and freedom that would last forever. We, in faith and hope, know that this has begun and will be completed in the future. They put their faith in an earthly city and earthly aspirations, and Our Lord knew those would turn to rubble within a few decades after his Ascension: Jerusalem and the Temple were razed to the ground in 70 A.D. by the Romans suppressing the Zealot uprising.

Our Lord shed those tears for all of us, not just those of his earthly ministry. We can still dry those tears. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to help us listen to what Our Lord wants to share with us, and for the strength to imitate him in fidelity to the Heavenly Father’s plan for our lives and for the world.

32nd Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday

In today’s Gospel Our Lord responds to the question that all the Jews at the time hand on their mind: when would the Kingdom of God come? For some it had meant the coming of a religious nation, purified from its sins; for others, the political autonomy and dominion of Israel over all its enemies. When Our Lord began his public ministry, he preached that the Kingdom of God was at hand. Now he tells us that the Kingdom of God is already present. How?

Just like the Jews we hope that something definitive will come with the Kingdom of God: that the evil that has plagued the world since the Fall will be definitively overthrown, and peace and justice restored to all of creation. We hope for an end to suffering, hunger, and illness, but it’s also evident that these things have not yet occurred. Our Lord reminds us today that the Kingdom is already present: it is active, just not easily seen. God is acting: hearts are being won back to him, and those hearts are going out and spreading his love among others and trying to be a force for positive change in society. Sometimes we may feel outnumbered and overwhelmed, but in hope we know the victory is already won, and it’s just a matter of spreading the Good News.

Our Lord teaches us today not to waste time looking for it on the horizon or seeking some prophet who supposedly has it already figured out. It’s going to be a long haul by everyone’s standards and he prepares us for that. We just have to persevere in faith, hope, and love, confident that through living a virtuous life we are welcoming the Kingdom into our hearts and helping others to reap its benefits as well.

30th Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday

In today’s Gospel Our Lord discounts the empty threat of the Pharisees who say that Herod is out to get him. It may be true, but it is not part of his Father’s plan that he should die at the hands of Herod. Our Lord knows the designs of His Father are far greater than the designs of scheming men. He knows in his earthly mission that he will be bringing to fulfillment the mission of every prophet that testified to his coming: to bear God’s message to his people, and to suffer death for it due to their lack of faith. In his case, it’ll be different: when he mentions that “on the third day I accomplish my purpose” he is probably referring to the Resurrection, after which he’ll resume his place at the Father’s right side, and, as St. Paul reminds us in today’s First Reading, intercedes for us. Death will no longer work to silence the Word of God.

At the same time Our Lord is saddened considering all the prophets who’d gone before him and Jerusalem’s resistance to believing in him, both as God and as Messiah. At the heart of Jerusalem, David’s city and a testimony to the Messiah and all the prophecies concerning him, the Temple represented God’s presence among his people. Now God was present in the flesh, in Christ. When those who didn’t believe in Jesus turned their back on God’s designs through his Son it wasn’t long before that Temple was destroyed (70 A.D.) and never rebuilt: believers are what count, not buildings.

Our Lord is interceding for us right now at the right hand of the Father. Ask him for what you need, but ask him especially for faith and insight into whatever part of his plan he wants you to help him with. Believers not only second his plan, they help with it.

29th Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday

Taking our faith more seriously and making the commitment to live it often means becoming a sign of contradiction, not just for today’s culture, but even for our family and friends. Accepting Christ’s invitation to repentance and belief is accepting Christ into your life as your best friend and more. For those who knew you before, it may seem like instead of your life being turned around by Christ, it has been turned upside down: they may see Christ as a rival for your affections, and that puts many converts into the difficult situation of having to choose between their loved ones and God. With your change in lifestyle they may see a condemnation of their own and blame the messenger (you), not the message, or simply not understand what has happened.

Our Lord doesn’t promise an easy solution to this dilemma. Everyone has to choose their path in this life, and conversion can imply a radical change in direction that others are unwilling or, at their moment of life, unable to do. All those paths are meant to converge in Christ, and for many people there are no shortcuts, or wrong turns that require time to recover from. This does not mean questioning our commitment to Christ; rather, it means patience and charity toward those we know and love, tactfully helping them where we can and entrusting them to the Lord where we can’t, knowing that the goal is help everyone where they’re at to advance along the path that Christ wishes to show them.

Let’s pray today that everyone may trust in the Lord, knowing, as today’s Psalm reminds us, that it’s the path to a blessed life.

28th Week in Ordinary Time, Thursday

In today’s First Reading Paul reminds us that the Law (the Mosaic Law observed by the Jews) and the prophets gave witness to what everyone after the Fall of Adam and Eve needed in order to be righteous in the eyes of God: God’s grace, won by the blood of Christ. To receive that grace we must believe in Christ and receive Baptism, and we become and remain “righteous” through living a life of grace. He was making this point because there were those who believed that the works of Mosaic Law were enough, but, as we know, that would have restricted salvation to the Jews as God’s chosen people. Faith in Christ and Baptism are what are needed, whether observant Jew or uninitiated Gentile, in order to being a life of grace.

In today’s Gospel Our Lord is criticizing the Pharisees and scribes because they are putting a muzzle on the witness that the Law and the prophets were meant to give as to how we can truly be righteous in the eyes of God. The Pharisees are criticized for building monuments to the very prophets that their predecessors killed: what they’re trying to present as an honorable acknowledgement of the prophets Jesus reveals as testifying to the fact that not only did they not listen to the prophets’ message, but silenced it by killing them. The scribes fared no better: they were the experts in the Law, and the Law was meant to give witness to God and to Christ, but they did not pay attention to that witness, nor did they share it with the Jews who sought the knowledge to be considered righteous in the eyes of God. As a result of Jesus’ criticism the Pharisees and scribes became an obstacle to Christ because they didn’t have faith in him, just as they became an obstacle to the prophets before him.

We can run the same of risk of not sharing the message or silencing it. It happens when Our Lord becomes simply a historical figure commemorated by a crucifix or cross on a wall and not the Lord of our life and our history who walks with us even today through prayer and the sacraments. We can muzzle the message of faith if we don’t let it transform our lives and share it with others, not only through our words, but through our example of Christian living. Let’s take off any muzzle that we make have placed on the Word in our lives today so that we can open the path to becoming and helping others to become righteous in the eyes of God.
